EDUCATION FILMMAKING PORTFOLIO
A selection of run-and-gun video work in classrooms and other education spaces.
sample 1: HUNDRED EDUCATION INNOVATION SPOTLIGHT|VIDEO SERIES, 2019
Overview | A COLLECTION OF 12 MINIDOCS HIGHLIGHTING EDUCATORS + PROGRAMS IN PITTSBURGH.
HundrED is a Finnish nonprofit focused on global networking, storytelling, and skill-sharing for educators. They selected Pittsburgh as the location for their first North American “Spotlight”, commissioning a video series and research report about the regional education ecosystem.
My Role | DP + Editor.
I was the sole cameraperson for the project, which was all recorded in two weeks. The crew was light: me, a sound person, and two field producers (Arielle + Ryan of root + all, who also appear in my Pittsburgh crew recommendations doc). To note, slow motion was required by the client to match their other video content (to that end, they also provided the title/graphics templates).
SERIES HIGHLIGHT | summer dreamers academy
A video featuring elementary-age students in public school classrooms. You can see the rest of the series here. I personally like the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild one.
sample 2: PLAYFUL PITTSBURGH COLLABORATIVE | Video, 2019
Overview | A VIDEO CELEBRATING PLAY.
Playful Pittsburgh Collaborative is a group of education organizations that collaborate on inclusive, meaningful play opportunities for people of all ages. They commissioned a video for fundraising and network-building.
My Role | DP + Editor.
I was the only cameraperson for 5 of the 6 shoots on this project. Same crew makeup as the HundrED videos above.
sample 3: university of pittsburgh|assorted videos, 2019 - 2020
Overview | MARKETING AND recruitment content.
I’ve worked on regular video and animation projects for Pitt since 2015. The university has internal video teams that do conventional marketing content, so I get hired to make more for-and-about minidoc style content for specific departments, events, and campaigns.
My Role | producer + dp + editor.
HIGHLIGHT 1 | recruitment event kickoff video, 2020
A video featuring lots of different learning environments in Pitt’s Dietrich School of Arts + Sciences.
HIGHLIGHT 2 | BELLET AWARD VIDEO, 2020
Part of an annual series celebrating recipients of a teaching award.
HIGHLIGHT 3 | Welcome video, 2019
Cheesy roundup of lots of classroom footage.
sample 4: We Are Nature | Video + Photo + PODCAST SERIES, 2021 - ONGOING
This project has nothing to do with recording in educational spaces; rather, I’ve included it to show the scale of doc project I’m comfortable producing.
Overview | A collection of stories about climate action + climate justice on the frontlines of the Anthropocene.
Commissioned for exhibitions and educators at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History. My team and I packed recording for nine stories into 2 busy production months last fall. Some of what we collected is on display in the museum’s Anthropocene Studies section We Are Nature exhibit; the rest is being edited into forthcoming videos and a podcast series, both for the museum’s content channels & for educator kits that the museum distributes to classrooms across the region. We hope these stories will…
break down how real people are working to mitigate climate change.
break down those approaches into actionable methodology, and provide points of entry for the audience to get involved.
be informed by natural history, as well as the history of how we talk about natural history.
emphasize collective action and intersectional justice. This often includes collaboration and solidarity with nonhumans.
My Role | Producer + Director + DP.
Collaborated with museum educators and researchers to identify regional climate action stories to highlight; proposed and developed series concept; co-wrote questions for 27 interviews; hired, scheduled, and supervised three production units to collect those interviews, supplementary b-roll, + photo sets for all nine stories; acted as DoP and conducted interviews for four of those stories (five shoots/ten interviews); currently, I’m editing three stories into a gazillion different video deliverables for the museum and its educational partners; in the next phase of the project, I’m slated to act as Editorial Director on videos telling the other six stories; finally, I’m editing (and hosting) a new podcast series that includes all 9 stories. Phewph!
series highlight | soil and sustenance
A minidoc about climate-friendly agriculture. This edit was made with educators in the museum (and in the community) working primarily with middle school students. You can view some more of the videos in the series here.
